What You REALLY Want for Mother’s Day

By Melissa

Hi, I’m Melissa, and I’m a mom. I’ve been celebrating Mother’s Day for a few years now, and I LOVE this holiday. Philip and I had been married for nine years before the first time I got to actually celebrate it as a mom, and we had long since decided against Valentine’s Day presents and anniversary presents. However, that year I told Philip, “By the way, I want a present for Mother’s Day. I’ve EARNED this one.” Yes yes, it is a bit dramatic, but so am I. 🙂 And six years later, I still fully stand behind that statement. Moms earn it, every dang day! Not that dad’s don’t, because we legit have the world’s most amazing hands-on, helpful, kind and patient dad over here, but he’s not as high maintenance as me and doesn’t expect much. Bless him.

But back to me and Mother’s Day. While I want a gift (that is wrapped, no less), I also try to convince Philip that I’m not bratty and high maintenance by asking for it to be something smallish. I mean, I can’t ask for too much or else then he’ll not be as thrilled to write me a long and thoughtful card about what a treasure of a mother I am. Ya feel me? But even though it is smallish, I still want it to be good.

So, that being said, here are things I either have, want, or have given that are some of my favorite go-to gifts for women. They are small, but lovely, or thoughtful, or useful, or just awesome. I also crowd sourced a few ideas from my sisters and sisters-in-law, and we have come up with what I think is a dang good list!

One-Touch Semi-Automatic Door Stop

It sounds ridiculous, but this door stop has been the best gift I’ve ever received. When we first moved into our house, I was over the dang moon about having a door stop on the door into the garage. “How convenient!” I cried, as I imagined bringing groceries in without fumbling with the doorknob. Fast forward a handful of years, our doorstop had broken, and Philip got me a new one. A BETTER one. The BEST one that could ever be given! With this one, you not only have the door stop, but now you don’t have to bend over or try to wedge your toe under it to lift it up! With this, you tap your foot on the top and it pops up. GAME CHANGED. Seriously, this is the best $10 that you will spend, hands down.

Apple Watch Band

I love my Apple Watch. For kind of dumb reasons, like knowing the temperature outside at all times, but regardless, I love it. However, sometimes I want to gussy it up a bit and have it look a little less like I wore it to the gym (JOOOOOOOKE, I don’t go to the gym, ha!). Enter this cute leather watch band. I have been eyeing it for over a year now, and even bought it for my sister, but have yet to splurge and spend the $19 to get one for myself. I think this is the perfect way to class it up just a little bit. That way I can feel fancy, AND still be able to tell you the temperature. And also, not show off my crazy bad watch tan line if I took it off.

In the meantime though, while I wait to splurge on the leather one, I did get this three pack of sporty bands, just because my original one was looking really rough. Now I wear the navy one pretty exclusively, but will switch on occasion. So if you are the working out type, these might be a perfect option to switch things up!

Eyelash Serum

I will likely do another post where I discuss my love of eyelashes in depth, but you guys, EYELASHES ARE LIFE!!! I’ve been blessed to have decent eyelashes, but will periodically go through phases where they all seem to fall out and I have short stubby ones and it just makes me sad. So last summer I was “influenced” on Prime Day to give this eyelash serum a try. I am so glad I did! It took about 4-6 weeks for me to notice a huge difference, but then they were so good! Like, SO GOOD. And I didn’t even use it every night (because who has time to wash their face every night?) and they still turned out great.

Now at $40+ it is a bit of a splurge, but do you know how much eyelash extensions cost? I don’t, because the times I’ve been told it makes my cheapy cheap cheap brain almost explode, and I can never remember anything except the fact that I think it’s way too much. And then they have to get filled! Anyway, it’s a cost I don’t want on my budget every month. So this link will take you to Walmart, which is the cheapest place I’ve found it, but I’m not sure how quickly it can get to you. If you want to spend more, it’s on Amazon too.

Cute Planter and Plant

Why give flowers when you can give a house plant? Now don’t get me wrong, I love fresh flowers, but dang they can be expensive! And then they die and it’s sad. So instead, what I would prefer, is cute new pots for cute indoor plants. Even without a plant, these little planters are so cute and could sit on a shelf or mantle just as a decorative piece. And if you have time to stop at the grocery store, Home Depot or Lowe’s, forego the succulents and grab a Snake plant. They are cute and modern and almost impossible to kill.

Cake Leveling Strips

Okay, I’m going out on a limb here. When I asked my sisters-in-law what things they wanted, one responded with these. Cake leveling strips. What the what? She explained that they make your cakes bake level so you don’t have to cut the dome off the top when stacking. Now since I don’t bake cakes, I responded and said she might be the only one that would want these, but another sister piped up and said she’s always wanted to try them too! 🙂 So how about that! Level cakes! I don’t know what voodoo this product uses to make this magic leveling work, but for the sake of my baking family, I’m glad they exist. And I’m excited to eat their cake that I know is so level.

Summer Fun Supplies

Summer is coming up! Are you going camping? To the beach? Hanging by the pool? It might be fun to get a few supplies depending on your plans or hobbies.

This Coleman chair can be used for camping or beach, shoot, even little league or porch sitting! There are a lot of nicer and more expensive ones out there, but a standard chair always does the trick. Plus, you can fit a four pack of be–sodas in that side pocket. 😉

If you are wanting to splurge a little, or already have standard chairs and want to live in luxury, another sister-in-law recently bought these zero gravity lounge chairs and she LOVES them!

And if you’re going to the beach, but won’t be sitting in chairs, how about an oversized beach towel? Since you know that when we are at the beach, kids never want to be on their own towels, they want to be on yours! Or on your lap. Or maybe sitting on your back as you try to lay down. Maybe you are laying out a little lunch spread for the family and need a little more room? Regardless, having an extra large towel or beach blanket will always come in handy. We never go to the beach without ours!

Crossbody Bag

This bag is the perfect little bag. When you don’t have to carry all of the kids’ things with you and just want the basics, this fits it! I am imagining kid-free vacations right now when I’m able to fit all I need into this lovely little thing. Also comes in a bunch of different colors and has a larger size if needed.

Serving Dishes

If you give me a pretty white platter, I will give you my heart. This was another suggestion by a sister-in-law that I agreed with instantly. While we can’t throw parties now, I love having lovely dishes in which to serve food on holidays or at get togethers. I love the idea of a big deep bowl for a beautiful salad, a large platter to put sandwiches on, or a set of identical smaller platters to lay out different varieties of fruits or desserts. Mmm, and now I want to have a party with delicious food. Anyway, I don’t think you can go wrong with simple white serving dishes, no matter the size or shape.

If you have an Ikea in your area, there are a lot of really great affordable options there, but I believe that right now they are only doing curbside pickup. Meaning, you’d need to navigate the website to find what you need and place the order, then go pick up. Target also always has lovely choices too.

I am not a cook. But for some reason, I always love getting cook books. There’s something about being able to flip through the beautiful pages and drool over pictures that is just a little more charming than looking at a recipe on my phone. There have been a few that I’ve seen several friends recommend recently that I’d love to try, especially since they seem to be full of favorites!

Magnolia Table Volume 1 and Volume 2. In my mind, Joanna Gaines can do no wrong. I would love to try either of these. There is a roasted potato recipe in the new one that I’ve been dying to get my hands on!

I feel like everyone I know has raved about Half Baked Harvest, and when they say they are “super simple,” they are speaking my love language! I would love to try this one as well!

Chrissy Teigen put out this cookbook, and then did a second! And maybe I’m judging the book by it’s cover, but when she says “ALL THE FOOD YOU WANT TO EAT” I’m thinking, heck yes, I want to eat all the food! I’ve heard great things about this one too. And the second one I wouldn’t say no to either. 😉

Okay, last cookbook. This one by Two Peas & Their Pod has been in my Amazon cart for a good little while now. It was recommended by two friends, both of which are phenomenal cooks, and I will basically believe anything they tell me about food.

Cute Earrings

This was another recommendation from my sister, and she loves a good set of earrings. The first pair are perfect everyday hoops, simple enough to wear every day and feel like they dress up an outfit without being too loud.

The second pair are cute statement earrings that are Anthropologie dupes and sell for $48 there! Who spends that?! Obviously ballers that won’t be looking at this gift guide, but goodness, that is silly to me. Anyway, these are a cool $8 and are a perfect way to accessorize! And there are also colorful options and different shapes if you wanted to switch it up a bit!

And that’s it! I feel like there is something for everyone here! I’m excited to see what Philip picks off this list to gift me. 😏 And now I need to decide which of these things to order for my mom also.

Truly though, if you are a woman and reading this, happy Mother’s Day. There were a lot of years that I wasn’t a mom and wanted to be that made me so grateful for all of the kind and wonderful women who mother and care for me and for others. Women are a gift in themselves, being able to love and serve so many around them. Thank you for all that you do!
